Groundhogs agree: We've passed midwinter— The week on APN - Jan. 29 - Feb. 4

As Groundhog Day arrived with its exaltations of noble, weather-predicting rodents, we got curious about how this quirky ritual emerged. Feb. 2 is smack halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox: Old Christians called it Candlemas, Celts and pagans celebrated Imbolc. Germans started to employ hedgehogs as meteorologists, and the rest — as they say — is history.

Whether you buy the fluff that a whistle-pig can summon the seasons, there's something to be said for turning points. We're over the hump, right? No looking back. And if you do, don't let your shadow scare you. It means there's sunshine out there. Turn up this week's playlist and reflect on how far you've come.
